Savane des Pétrifications
14° 24.1′ N · 60° 51.5′ W
An arid, almost lunar headland of red and ochre earth, cactus and agave above the surf at Pointe d'Enfer. It is one of the oldest geological zones in Martinique and was once littered with petrified wood.
Practical
Position from French Wikipedia. Reach it on the Trace des Caps, about 4-5 km easy from the Grande Anse des Salines car park towards Anse Trabaud. Collectors have removed almost all the petrified wood, and collecting is now forbidden. A municipal order bans approaching the cliff edges because of rockfall. There is no shade, so carry water and go early. Views take in Anse Écluse, Anse Braham and the Table du Diable rock.
Best for
A short desert-meets-Atlantic walk
