Baie des Anglais Anchorage

14° 25.5′ N · 60° 50.7′ W

A wild, reef-protected Atlantic bay where you surf in through the breakers to sudden flat calm. Mangroves line the head of the bay and the bird-reserve islets of Ste-Anne lie offshore.

Practical

Position from Anchorages.co. Multihulls World describes an entrance 'with breakers all around us' and then flat calm inside. It recommends going deep into the bay by the mangrove for a peaceful night, and warns it is not for monohulls or boats drawing more than 2 m. Régis Guillemot Charter says mooring on a buoy (corps-mort) is compulsory because the bay is protected as a nature reserve. Landing on the reserve islets is forbidden (see 'Îlets de Sainte-Anne Nature Reserve'). Enter only in good light and settled weather; it is roughly two hours' sail from Le Marin. A catamaran wrecked by Hurricane Dean (2007) was still visible years later, so the bay is no true hurricane hole. Local fishermen can arrange beach lobster barbecues.

Best for

Shoal-draft boats wanting solitude on the windward side
