Trace des Caps Coastal Trail (Salines to Cap Chevalier)

14° 24.1′ N · 60° 52.8′ W · approximate

A yellow-blazed coastal path along Martinique's wild south-east corner, linking Les Salines, the red-earth desert of the Savane des Pétrifications, Anse Trabaud, Baie des Anglais and Cap Chevalier.

Practical

Coordinates are the Grande Anse des Salines trailhead (approximate). Visorando's one-way route from Anse Michel (Cap Chevalier) to Grande Anse des Salines is 15.6 km and about 4.5 hours, rated moderate. Leave a car at the end or book a taxi; one hiker paid Taxi Cap €30 after negotiating. The short Salines to Anse Trabaud section through the savane is about 4-5 km and easy (Routard). There is no water source except along Grande Terre, and almost no shade. Start at dawn. In the rainy season a mangrove crossing about 150 m after waypoint 4 can be impassable clockwise. A ford on slippery rocks near Anse Écluse can be submerged. A municipal order bans approaching the cliff edges (rockfall), especially at Pointe d'Enfer.
