12° 13.6′ N · 61° 36.5′ W · approximate

Each spring, hundreds of endangered leatherback turtles, the world's largest turtle at up to 1.8 m and 500 kg, haul up Levera Beach at night to lay eggs. Community guides lead small groups to watch.

Practical

Position is the OpenStreetMap beach (approx). Season: leatherbacks nest from about March to July (GTA), and the SPECTO community group runs tours April to July. SPECTO (St Patrick's Environmental and Community Tourism Organization, +1 473 405 8395) charges international visitors US$20 (Secret Harbour booklet, undated; verify locally). Watch only with a licensed guide. Use no lights or flash and keep back from a nesting turtle. It is an Atlantic beach with strong currents, so swim with caution (GTA). Go by taxi from the south coast at night, a 1.5–2 hour drive, and arrange the return ride in advance.
