La Soufrière Volcanic Hazard (2021 eruption)

13° 20.0′ N · 61° 11.0′ W

La Soufrière is an active stratovolcano. After a lava dome grew from December 2020, explosive eruptions from April 9 to 22, 2021, forced about 16,000 people to evacuate and dropped ash across neighbouring islands.

Practical

Summit position from Wikipedia. It is one of the region's two active volcanoes that sailors need to track (the other is Kick 'em Jenny). Historic explosive eruptions: 1718, 1812, 1902 (1,680 killed), 1979 and 2021. SVG Tourism says it is now out of its explosive phase. Doyle notes the volcano has largely settled and residents have returned, and reports some shifting of the bottom at Chateaubelair. Before cruising the north-west coast or hiking, check the alert level with the UWI Seismic Research Centre (uwiseismic.com) and the SVG authorities. Ash fall can coat decks and foul engine intakes and solar panels.
