Kick 'em Jenny Exclusion Zone
12° 18.0′ N · 61° 38.4′ W
Grenada's active submarine volcano sits about 185 m below the surface, 8 km north of Grenada and 8 km west of Ronde, right on the direct line between Carriacou and St George's. Mariners must keep outside its exclusion zone, which widens when the alert level rises.
Practical
Coordinate is the volcano's summit (12.30 N, 61.64 W; Wikipedia and the OpenStreetMap volcano node). Rules: alert level YELLOW means a 1.5 km exclusion zone for all marine traffic; during periods of high seismic activity it widens to 5 km (Wikipedia). Activity: at least twelve eruptions since 1939, the last in April 2017. A seismic swarm began on August 27, 2025, and the alert stayed at YELLOW with the 1.5 km zone (ODPM/UWI SRC, August 29, 2025); by September 1, 2025 tremors had dropped sharply (NOW Grenada). Dangers include gas bubbles that reduce water density and can sink a vessel, and the channel is known for kicking up big seas when wind is against tide (a 2014 cruiser report). Check the current alert level with NaDMA or the UWI Seismic Research Centre before every passage. Some cruisers report the zone marked on their charts and others not, so plot a 1.5 km and 5 km circle yourself.
