Buccoo Goat and Crab Races (Easter)

11° 10.8′ N · 60° 48.4′ W · approximate

Tobago's best-loved Easter festival: barefoot 'jockeys' sprint alongside goats down a 110 m track at the Buccoo beach facility, followed by crab races steered with string.

Practical

Position is Buccoo village, approx; the races run at the purpose-built track behind the Buccoo Integrated Facility (not separately mapped). Held on Easter Monday and Easter Tuesday, with Tuesday the main Buccoo day; a street parade opens the morning, then races, food, drinks and crafts. Goat racing began in 1925 with Samuel Callender as the working people's answer to colonial horse racing. A mid-year goat-race event is also held during the Heritage Festival (July).
