Hurricane season (southern chain)
18° 21.4′ N · 64° 35.1′ W · approximate
June 1 to November 30 is Atlantic hurricane season, peaking around September 10; the southern chain's open bays and day moorings offer no storm shelter, and the islands' resorts and bars thin out from August.
Practical
Placed at Great Harbour, Peter Island (OpenStreetMap bay node), the anchorage where the RMS Rhone lay when the hurricane of October 29, 1867 drove her onto Black Rock Point (Wikipedia), a reminder that these bays are not hurricane holes. NOAA National Hurricane Center: season June 1 to November 30, peak September 10, most activity mid-August to mid-October. Yacht Warriors places the BVI peak at July to October with trades easing to about 5 to 15 knots and some establishments closed. Peter Island's marina rules require boats to leave and seek a hurricane shelter when a storm approaches. 2026 closures: Cooper Island Beach Club August 3 to November 1; Pirates Bight closed August and September (season October to July); Peter Island has not published dates. Watch nhc.noaa.gov daily, know your charter company's storm plan and where it sends boats (this database lists Paraquita Bay on Tortola as a hurricane shelter), and expect thunderstorms and squalls even without a named storm.
