Great Tobago & Little Tobago (seabirds)

18° 26.7′ N · 64° 49.5′ W

The wild, cliff-bound Tobagos at the western tip of the BVI, a national park and Important Bird Area holding the Caribbean's third-largest nesting seabird population and the only magnificent frigatebird colony in the BVI.

Practical

Coordinate is Great Tobago from Wikipedia/GeoHack. NPT: Great Tobago (210 acres, park since 1995) and Little Tobago (55 acres, 1998); bird sanctuary, no entry ashore. Watch from the water for frigatebirds launching on the updraft in the east-side valley, brown boobies, red-billed tropicbirds, roseate terns and pelicans. No anchoring: there is no sand and every possible anchoring spot is virgin coral; large fines and even boat confiscation apply, and the area is patrolled by Marine Police (JVD Scuba). Seabed drops to about 50 m close to the cliffs. Visit by dive or eco-tour boat from Jost Van Dyke, or sail past in daylight.
