Ensenada Honda Anchorage (Culebra)

18° 18.2′ N · 65° 17.6′ W · approximate

Culebra's big, reef-guarded inner harbor and the reason cruisers stay for weeks: about 1.5 miles of flat water ringed by scrubby hills, with Dewey's dinghy docks, bars and groceries at its northwest head. The Coast Pilot calls it the most secure anchorage in the area.

Practical

Position is approximate: set in the northwest part of the bay between the OpenStreetMap 'Ensenada Honda' label and Cayo Pirata, where the Virgintino guide says most boats anchor; checked against OpenStreetMap coastline to sit in water about 240 m from shore. Per the Virgintino guide (about 2015): protected from all directions, easy anchoring with good holding in a largely sand bottom, and some areas have free moorings (verify locally). Coast Pilot 5 (ch. 13): harbor about 1.5 miles long and up to 0.5 mile wide with several small shallow bays; controlling depth through the buoyed entrance is 26 ft. Enter only in daylight (see the Ensenada Honda Entrance passage). Dinghy to the free town dock in Dewey (Virgintino) or to the Dinghy Dock restaurant. Coast Pilot says no fresh water is available for vessels and gasoline comes in drums; the Virgintino guide says water and fuel can be had around the bay, so ask locally and carry jerry cans. The whole island lies inside a designated green sea turtle critical habitat (50 CFR 226.208): watch for turtles when running the dinghy.
