Bahía Salina del Sur Anchorage (Vieques)
18° 7.7′ N · 65° 18.4′ W · approximate
A wild, half-mile bay near the east tip of Vieques, sheltered behind Cayo Conejo and Roca Alcatraz, where the trades keep the boat cool; it lies in the old bombing range, so it is look-but-don't-land country.
Practical
Position is approximate: in the west half of the bay as Coast Pilot 5 advises, checked against the OpenStreetMap coastline (about 130 m off). Coast Pilot 5 (October 2026 edition): 2 miles west of Punta Este, 0.5 mile in diameter; anchorage in the west half in 18 to 24 ft, sheltered from winds north of east; Roca Alcatraz (rocks 10 to 15 ft high) lies 0.4 mile off the entrance points and Cayo Conejo (about 40 ft, wooded) 0.3 mile off the west point; the clearer entrance is between Roca Alcatraz and the island off the west point; for 1 mile west of that island, shoals of 18 ft and less extend nearly 0.5 mile offshore. Virgintino's Cruising Guide (2015): entrance waypoint 18°07.24'N, 65°18.03'W, just south of the entrance at Roca Alcatraz; entering from the east (Roca Alcatraz to port) there is a low spot under 6 ft dead ahead; from the west, leave Cayo Conejo to port and head up unimpeded; signs warn of unexploded bombs ashore and the author prefers anchorages further west. Restrictions: the bay is inside the former 33 CFR 334.1470 bombing and gunnery danger zone east of Cabellos Colorados and Punta Conejo, and the adjoining land is the closed eastern part of the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge; USFWS says areas not open to the public may not be visited by land or sea at any time. Do not go ashore, do not snorkel or dive near debris, and check with the refuge (787-851-7258) and current Local Notices to Mariners before planning a night here. Exposed to anything south of east.
