Puerto Ferro Anchorage (Vieques)

18° 6.2′ N · 65° 25.4′ W · approximate

A small, limestone-walled bioluminescent cove on the south coast of Vieques, east of Mosquito Bay: a narrow but straightforward entrance opens into a very well protected pool for a quiet night away from Esperanza.

Practical

Position is approximate: toward the east side of the bay's center as the cruising guide recommends, checked against the OpenStreetMap coastline (about 80 m clear of shore) and kept clear of the charted sunken rock. Coast Pilot 5 (October 2026 edition): a boat harbor 9 miles west of Punta Este with 6 to 8 ft at the 250-yard entrance and 7 to 15 ft inside; a sunken rock lies about 0.5 mile inside the entrance at 18°06'21"N, 65°25'30"W. Frank Virgintino's Cruising Guide to Puerto Rico (2015): entrance waypoint 18°05.94'N, 65°25.13'W just southeast of the entrance; the entrance looks narrower than it is, with a spot a few inches under 7 ft; anchor toward the east side of the center; a very well protected inlet. Draft over about 6 ft should not try it. Restrictions: the bay sits inside the 33 CFR 334.1480 south-coast Navy restricted strip (Puerto Mosquito east to Punta Conejo), a Navy-era rule still listed; check current Local Notices to Mariners. The surrounding Puerto Ferro peninsula is Vieques National Wildlife Refuge land: the Puerto Ferro Trail (0.29 mile) to the lighthouse and Puerto Ferro beach is open, but stay out of any area signed closed, and never touch metal objects (unexploded ordnance). No services; nearest dinghy landing with town is Esperanza, about 3 miles west.
