Bahía de la Chiva Anchorage (Vieques)

18° 6.6′ N · 65° 23.5′ W · approximate

A remote horseshoe bay on Vieques' southeast coast with Isla Chiva in the middle and a long white beach, reachable in comfort only by boat: the classic first Vieques stop for charter boats coming down from Culebra.

Practical

Position is approximate: in the western part of the bay off Playa Chiva, using OpenStreetMap's beach and bay outlines and keeping well away from Isla Chiva. Sail Caribe's 7-night itinerary sails here from Culebra (beam reach to the east end, then downwind along the south coast) and refers to casting off a mooring next morning; Coast Pilot 5 calls the bight shallow. Hazards: unexploded ordnance reported in 2013 about 600 yards south of the bay around Isla Chiva, with mariners cautioned not to transit or anchor around it (Coast Pilot); three submerged rocks reported in 1978 about 1.4 and 1.9 miles south-southwest of Punta Conejo; an offshore fueling line marked by buoys extends about 700 yards from the tank west of the bay. The bay lies in the 33 CFR 334.1480 south-coast restricted strip (Navy-era rule; check current Local Notices). Exposed to the south; untenable in southerly swell. Do not land anywhere signed closed.
