Songkran (Thai New Year) in Phang Nga
8° 27.9′ N · 98° 31.9′ E · approximate
Thailand's New Year water festival, 13–15 April, when streets turn into water fights and families pour scented water over elders' hands and bathe Buddha images.
Practical
Position approximate: Phang Nga town (Wikipedia coordinates); no source checked lists a specific Phang Nga venue. Songkran is a national holiday, 13 April with the holiday running 14–15 April, and the government has stretched the holiday period in some years. Expect shops, government offices and some services to close or run short hours, ferries and transfers to be busy, and any provisioning ashore to get you soaked. Keep phones and papers in dry bags. Roads are notoriously dangerous: road deaths roughly double during the 'seven dangerous days'. Avoid scooters and driving at night. The Muslim Koh Yao villages mark it less. Mid-April is the tail of the dry season, before the SW monsoon arrives in May.
