Loy Krathong (Phang Nga)
8° 27.9′ N · 98° 31.9′ E · approximate
On the full-moon night of the 12th Thai lunar month, people float candle-lit banana-leaf baskets (krathong) on rivers, canals and the sea to make a wish. It is one of Thailand's loveliest evenings.
Practical
Position approximate: Phang Nga town (Wikipedia coordinates), as a stand-in for mainland celebrations; no source checked lists a specific Phang Nga venue. Dates from Wikipedia: 24 November 2026, 13 November 2027, 1 November 2028, in the evening. The Koh Yao islands and Koh Panyi are mainly Muslim, so expect the festival on the Buddhist mainland and Phuket rather than in those villages. Sky lanterns are increasingly restricted as an aircraft hazard and Styrofoam krathong are being banned. At anchor near towns, watch the next morning for floating krathong debris around props and water intakes. Early in the NE-monsoon season, so the cruising weather is usually settling.
