Phuket King's Cup Regatta (Kata Beach, early December)
7° 48.9′ N · 98° 17.8′ E · approximate
Asia's best-known regatta, first sailed in 1987 for the 60th birthday of King Bhumibol and held every year in the first week of December. Up to 100 yachts and 600 sailors race coastal and inshore courses off Phuket's west coast, ending with a royal awards ceremony.
Practical
Run by the organising committee under the Royal Varuna Yacht Club with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and Phuket Province. Classes include racing, cruising, multihulls and classics; 103 boats raced in 2007 (Wikipedia). Beyond Resort (formerly Kata Beach Resort) at Kata has co-hosted since 1998 (SEAP). Coordinate is the Kata south-east anchorage, approximate for the regatta base. Expect Kata and Nai Harn anchorages to be full that week. Entries via kingscup.com.
