Mai Khao Beach Anchorage

8° 11.1′ N · 98° 17.2′ E

An anchorage off Phuket's 7-mile northern beach, part of it bordering the national park, about a mile south of the shifting bar at the western entrance to the Phuket-mainland channel.

Practical

Anchor about 100 m off the steep, coarse-sand beach (SEAP). Stay a mile or more south of the bar at the channel entrance: the sandbars shift constantly, keelboats should not enter, and even shoal-draft boats need local knowledge. Do not anchor within half a mile of the airport runway, which is visible from seaward. Local buses can be hailed on the beach road for the bridge or highway.

Best for

Staging for Sarasin Bridge sightseeing or a quiet north-coast night
