Anchorage· Koh Surin Nua· Thailand

Koh Surin Nua Park HQ Anchorage (Chong Khad Bay)

9° 24.8′ N · 97° 52.4′ E

The main yacht anchorage in the Surin Islands, at the northeast end of the channel between Surin Nua and Surin Tai, below the park headquarters at Ao Chong Khad. The fringing reefs are superb, and there is almost no development 108 nm from Patong.

Practical

Southeast Asia Pilot position 09°24.773N, 97°52.364E. A good overnight haven in the NE monsoon. Anchor about 18 m out in the bay on sand, keeping clear of coral, or take one of the few large moorings or several visitor yacht moorings for a small charge. A second bay just north of the channel also has moorings but is less convenient for HQ. Park HQ is on the north side of the bay. On the south side, on Surin Tai, a sandy spit has a spring at its north end that can be reached at high tide. The inter-island channel is not navigable (about 2 m at high water). Ashore at HQ there are bungalows, a campsite (Chong Khad 15 October to 30 November), a restaurant, showers and toilets. Fees: 500 THB per foreign adult (Thai National Parks, 2026). Warn: the Myanmar border is only a few miles north, and you need permission before entering those waters.

Best for

Overnighting at Surin and dinghy snorkelling the fringing reefs

Season

Mid-October to mid-May; best in the NE monsoon
