Koh Hong Lagoon (Phang Nga)

8° 13.3′ N · 98° 30.1′ E · approximate

A hong, the Thai word for 'room': sheer limestone walls ring a lagoon open to the sky through a huge chimney, reached through a low cave on the island's south side. It is the signature Phang Nga Bay experience.

Practical

Position approximate, from geotagged Wikimedia Commons photos of the Koh Hong lagoon (8.2205–8.2214N, 98.5007E) next to Anchorage B. Rangers have roped off the island, and dinghies are not permitted in the main cave. A cruising crew in January 2025 found entry was by canoe only, on a paid guided trip with a local boatman; the chambers lead out into the lagoon. One charter operator says the gap through the rock is passable for only about half an hour a day, so time your visit with the canoe operators and the tide. Approaching from the east, look for the dog-shaped rock on the cliff top. Park fee applies; carry cash.
