Dive· Koh Hin Pousar (#6)· Thailand
Elephant Head Rock
8° 37.2′ N · 97° 38.4′ E
The Similans' signature boulder dive: a cluster of granite rocks breaking the surface like an elephant's head, with a maze of swim-throughs, arches and channels dropping to sand at about 40 m.
Practical
Coordinate is the OSM-mapped dive site off Koh Hin Pousar. Depth 5–40 m; current moderate to strong and often multidirectional, so it is for intermediate to advanced divers (Khao Lak Explorer; Wikivoyage). Whitetip and blacktip reef sharks, giant morays, octopus and sweetlips; Khao Lak Explorer lists it among the best Similan spots for whale sharks. No anchoring: the bottom is deep and rocky, so drop divers from a moving tender and pick them up on surface markers. Named by Horst Hinrichs in the mid-1970s.
Best for
Swim-throughs and big boulder topography
Season
Mid-October to mid-May; best February to April for pelagics
