Sooty Tern Census Decline and Egg-Collecting Ban
6° 13.8′ S · 53° 2.4′ E · approximate
A 2021 census found sooty-tern numbers down 60-70% across all Seychelles islands since 1999, and the government banned collecting sooty-tern eggs for two years in 2022.
Practical
Egg harvests, a Seychellois tradition run by IDC on parts of Desnoeufs and later Cosmoledo (2020 and 2026), are tightly controlled. Never buy or take eggs, and keep away from colonies in the SE-monsoon breeding season. Coordinate is approximate: plotted near Desnoeufs.
