Farquhar Lagoon Anchorage (East Side)

10° 8.5′ S · 51° 9.5′ E · approximate

The flat-water anchorage inside Farquhar lagoon, in the lee of North Island, where cruisers bound for Madagascar have sheltered when the weather turned.

Practical

The crew of the cruising yacht Ocelot (2007) anchored outside near the northern lagoon entrance (10°06.7'S, 51°09.5'E) on arrival at night, then next morning motored in with a lookout aloft to pick through the sand bars and shoals, and anchored on the far (east) side in protected, flat water. The lagoon water was so silty they could not see the bottom in 8 m. IDC gives the lagoon a maximum depth of 14.6 m. Pub. 171 (2010) warns that boats drawing more than 3 m should not try the channel to the inner harbour except in emergency: it is narrow and winding, with 3-4 knot streams; lagoon outflow can make uncomfortable rips outside. Enter at slack water in good overhead light only. You need IDC permission, arranged and paid in Victoria before you sail; without it you may not be allowed ashore. Coordinate is approximate: a point in the lagoon just W of the North Island shore, from the OpenStreetMap island outline; not a surveyed position.
