Curieuse Marine National Park (Baie Laraie)

4° 17.3′ S · 55° 43.8′ E · approximate

The shallow bay cupped between Curieuse's two ranges of hills, with the rangers' station, tortoise sanctuary and Anse Papaie beach on its northeast shore and the broken remains of the old turtle-pond causeway across its head. Anchor off, land the dinghy, and the giant tortoises wander down the beach to meet you.

Practical

One of the two anchorages the Moorings 2024 eGuide names for Curieuse (Baie Laraie and Anse José); it lists no mooring buoys, while the SPGA charges Rs250 per yacht for overnight mooring in the marine parks, so confirm with the rangers whether buoys are in place. The SPGA leaflet calls Baie Laraie a shallow bay: anchor in the outer bay on sand, sound your way in and keep well off the old causeway remains and coral. Anchor or moor only in designated areas (SPGA rule) — no anchoring on coral. Entry Rs300 per non-resident over 12, paid by card on site or online (no cash, SPGA); park open daily 8am–5pm per SPGA visitor information (the Curieuse park page says 9am–5pm). The Moorings route plans put the Curieuse overnight in the NW-monsoon itinerary; the bay opens toward Praslin and the Curieuse channel, so it is a fair-weather or NW-season stop. No fishing, spearguns, shell or coral collecting, water-skiing or motorised water sports anywhere in the park. No fuel, water or provisions. Coordinate approx: outer Baie Laraie read off the park signboard map (CurieuseMap.jpg) georeferenced to geotagged Commons photos; depth not published in the sources used — sound in.
