The Whale Museum (Friday Harbor)

48° 32.1′ N · 123° 1.0′ W

A small nonprofit museum a block from the docks, open since 1979 and focused on the orcas and other whales of the Salish Sea. It also runs the Soundwatch boater education programme and the Whale Hotline sightings network. A good stop before you go whale watching under your own keel.

Practical

Coordinate is the OSM museum building in Friday Harbor. General phone 360-378-4710 ext. 1030; check the museum website for current hours. Report sightings through the museum's Whale Hotline page. Orca rules: since January 1, 2025 Washington law says keep 1,000 yards (about half a nautical mile) from Southern Resident orcas. If they come within 400 yards, take the engine out of gear, luff the sails or stop paddling until they pass; between 400 and 1,000 yards, move away at 7 knots or less. WDFW asks you to treat any orca you cannot identify as a Southern Resident. The federal rule still applies too: no closer than 200 yards to any killer whale, and never park in their path.
