Fisherman Bay (Lopez Island)

48° 30.7′ N · 122° 55.5′ W

A shallow lagoon on the west side of Lopez behind a long sand spit, with two marinas and restaurants, and Lopez Village a mile's walk north. The entrance is narrow and winding, but once inside it is sheltered from all directions.

Practical

Coordinate is the OSM bay. Enter by the marked, narrow, winding channel on a rising tide, slowly, with the depth sounder on; keep between the marks and watch for the rock awash on the east side at the mouth. The tidal current in the entrance is strong. Inside, anchor in 10-12 ft (3-3.7 m), soft bottom (Coast Pilot); the bay is charted under 2 fathoms (12 ft) and a minus tide can leave little water. Groundings in the entrance are common. Protection is good except in strong southerlies. Most piers and tidelands are private; public access at the street ends near the entrance and at Fisherman Bay Preserve on the spit.
