Friday Harbor Anchorage (San Juan Island)

48° 32.4′ N · 123° 0.7′ W · approximate

There is room to anchor in the harbour between Brown Island and the town waterfront when the marina is full or you would rather swing. It is busy with ferries and floatplanes, but town is a short dinghy ride away.

Practical

Position is approximate. Coast Pilot gives 6-7 fathoms (36-42 ft, 11-13 m) between Brown Island and the waterfront. Keep clear of the charted cable and pipeline area and the wrecks just to the north-west, and stay at least 100 yards off the marina's floating breakwater (its anchor cables). Shoals run about 200 yards off the east and south sides of Brown Island; a daybeacon marks the south-east end. Enter east or west of Brown Island; Reid Rock (13.5 ft, 4 m) sits mid-channel off the entrance with a lighted buoy. Watch for seaplanes and ferry wake. No harvest of bottomfish or shellfish in the Friday Harbor marine preserve along the UW Labs shore. Use the port dinghy dock to land.
