Stone Island Outside Anchorage (Mazatlán)

23° 10.9′ N · 106° 24.2′ W · approximate

An open roadstead off the long beach of Isla de la Piedra, just southeast of the commercial harbor entrance. It's away from the ship traffic and the city noise, a quiet first or last night on the Mazatlán–Baja crossing.

Practical

Sand bottom off a gently shoaling beach. Open from the southeast through the west, so it's only comfortable in settled northwest conditions, and southwest swell makes it rolly. Landing on the beach can be wet through surf. A 2022 cruiser report says it was a good first stop but hard to reach town from, and the crew moved into a marina ahead of a weather change. Coordinate is derived from the OpenStreetMap coastline, about 0.15 nm off the beach, and is not a surveyed spot. Sound in to your preferred depth.

Best for

Quiet overnight stop clear of the harbor traffic

Season

Nov–May in settled NW weather; untenable in S–SW swell
