Quimixto Day Anchorage
20° 30.5′ N · 105° 21.9′ W · approximate
A lunch-hook stop off the roadless village of Quimixto, at the mouth of the Río La Puerta on the jungle south shore. From the beach, horses and a trail lead up a canyon to the waterfall pool.
Practical
Coordinate is approximate: an open-water point about 400 m north of Playa Quimixto (OSM 20.50513, -105.3651), off Boca Quimixto (OSM 20.50559, -105.36607). It is not a surveyed anchorage. SAIL magazine lists Las Ánimas and Quimixto among the day sails 'just across the bay' (December 2014). Noonsite (May 2026) does not list it as an overnight anchorage; the bay's documented overnight spots are La Cruz, Punta de Mita and the Yelapa moorings. The south shore drops off steeply toward the deep Los Arcos canyon, so sound carefully before you drop and expect deep water close in. The bay is open to the north and northwest, the direction the afternoon thermal and wind chop come from, so leave by early afternoon. Tour pangas and water taxis run constantly to the beach; anchor well clear of their landing lane. Land the dinghy through the shore break. No fuel or provisions beyond the village palapas.
