Punta Lobos Drift Dive and Mobula Rays (Espíritu Santo)

24° 28.7′ N · 110° 17.3′ W · approximate

A drift dive along a boulder slope and wall off Punta Lobos on Espíritu Santo's east side - octopus, giant seahorses and, in late spring and summer, mobula rays sometimes by the thousand.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: a water point just NE of Punta Lobos as placed on the georeferenced CONANP park zoning map (page 9 of the rules compendium). Note that OpenStreetMap names the cape at 24.45877 N, 110.29351 W 'Punta Lobos', but the CONANP map labels that cape Punta Bonanza and puts Punta Lobos about 2 km farther north, just south of La Salinita; the coast between the two points is Restricted Use Subzone 1 (core zone, with San Gabriel and Los Islotes) - no fishing of any kind and no large-boat anchorage. Cortez Club does not give a position, so confirm the site with an operator - 'Punta Lobos' is also used for the Roca Lobos area near Caleta Lobos. Cortez Club: novice, slope to 45 ft, wall to 90 ft; sea lion numbers fluctuate. Exposed east-side site - calm conditions only. Inside Archipiélago Espíritu Santo National Park: park bracelet required.
