Playa Santa Bárbara Anchorage

26° 42.1′ N · 111° 52.8′ W

The antidote to Highway 1 noise — a high-bluffed cove a mile from the road where even the birds let you sleep in, and the best shelter in the bay from south through east.

Practical

Careful navigation: approach from outside the islands, slip south of Isla Guapa and pass between the eastern peninsula and Islote Tecomate (shoals all round it, especially west). Then avoid the sandy shoal/reef across much of the west side of the cove, hard to see in afternoon light. Anchor in 25-30 ft about two-thirds of the way off the beach to reduce mangrove bugs. Protected E, S, W. Small encampments ashore; a trail leads up the east ridge. A whale shark has been seen in this cove.

Best for

Quiet nights and south-to-east wind protection
