Northern Gulf Summer Hurricane Strategy
28° 56.5′ N · 113° 26.9′ W · approximate
Many boats spend the eastern Pacific hurricane season (May 15–Nov 30) in the northern Gulf: either on the hard in San Carlos, Guaymas or Puerto Peñasco, or afloat with the 'summer tribe' at Bahía de los Ángeles, ready to run to Puerto Don Juan.
Practical
Coordinate is Puerto Don Juan, the region's recognised hurricane hole (room for 25+ boats). Isla La Ventana sheltered a boat through Hurricane Kay (2022). Storms do reach this far north: Mulegé was flooded by Hurricanes John (2006), Jimena (2009), Paul (2012) and Odile (2014), and Odile destroyed Santa Rosalía's old marina. Book dry storage (Marina Seca, Marina Real, Marina Guaymas, Cabrales) well ahead; a summer Starlink/satellite link for forecasts is essential since there is no cell service at Bahía de los Ángeles.
