Isla San Andrés (Chamela Islands)

19° 31.5′ N · 105° 5.6′ W

The southernmost sizable island of the Chamela group, a rocky, uninhabited sanctuary island lying just off the mainland shore near Playa El Negrito at the south end of the bay, with Isla Negrita and the Islote Submarino rock close by.

Practical

Position: centroid of the OpenStreetMap outline of Isla San Andrés (about 400 m by 300 m). Part of the Santuario Islas de la Bahía de Chamela (nature-reserve polygons in OpenStreetMap); no landing on nesting areas, no take. No cruiser account of anchoring at San Andrés itself was found: the reported island anchorages are among the three islands that huddle together to the north around Isla Colorada (San Agustín, San Pedro, Colorada) and in the lee of Isla Cocinas. The passage between San Andrés and the mainland is foul with rocks (Isla Negrita and its bare rocks, Islote Submarino to the west); do not take it by keel boat. A view and dinghy-exploring target from the Colorada anchorage on calm days.
