Isla Colorada Anchorage (Chamela)

19° 32.4′ N · 105° 5.4′ W · approximate

A small island close inshore at the south end of the Chamela group, where cruisers anchor to land on a tiny beach, explore tide pools and watch hundreds of pelicans roost in the shoreline trees. You can often have the island to yourself.

Practical

Position approximate: placed about 150 m east of Isla Colorada from the OpenStreetMap outline; Fagan's March 2011 report anchored here (photo captions call it 'Isla Colorado'). Surf sloshes hard onto the rocks; land the dinghy only in calm conditions. Part of the island sanctuary: no take. Snorkeling is good near the islands when the water is clear; after red tide the water can carry scum and make swimmers ill, so do not swallow it.

Best for

Having an island beach and pelican roost to yourself
