Isla Cocinas Day Anchorage (Chamela)

19° 32.9′ N · 105° 6.3′ W · approximate

A lunch-hook spot in the lee of Isla Cocinas, the most-visited of the Chamela islands, where you can swim ashore to its small beach and snorkel the rocky fringes among pelicans, boobies and turtles.

Practical

Position approximate: placed about 170 m off the east (lee) side of Isla Cocinas, measured from the OpenStreetMap outline of the island, and about 250 m south of the charted bare rock off its northeast tip. No published depths or holding for this spot were found: approach slowly in good light, sound your way in and anchor in sand clear of the rocks. Exposed to the afternoon northwesterly sea breeze wrapping around the island and to any southerly swell; treat it as a daytime stop and return to the Pérula anchorage (about 2 nm north) for the night. The island lies inside the Santuario Islas de la Bahía de Chamela: no fishing or collecting, keep away from nesting birds, take all trash off. Local pangas from Playa Pérula bring day-trippers, so expect company around midday. No services; bring water and shade. Red tide some winters makes the water murky.
