Isla Grande (Ixtapa) Anchorage

17° 40.7′ N · 101° 39.1′ W

A sand-bottomed anchorage on the lee side of Isla Ixtapa (Isla Grande), about a mile off the Ixtapa resort coast, with clearer water than Zihuatanejo and three palapa-lined beaches a short dinghy ride away. Busy with water taxis by day, nearly empty after the last panga leaves at dusk.

Practical

S/V Liquid's logged position 17°40.68'N 101°39.10'W, in 19 ft over sand (2017-18 notes); expect a slight roll depending on wind and tide. Visibility 5-10 ft. Daytime traffic is heavy: jet skis, banana boats, pangas and covered water taxis shuttling from Playa Linda on the mainland, plus big charter power yachts in the afternoons. No fuel, no potable water (bottled water sold ashore), no store, no showers, no laundry; dinghy landing is easy. Garbage bins are on the mainland walkway at Playa Linda. Roads Less Traveled reported red tides sweeping through during a 10-day stay (Dec 2010). Quiet at night with only a handful of island residents. About 10 miles by water from Zihuatanejo.

Best for

A cleaner-water alternative to Zihuatanejo with beach palapas and snorkeling
