Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve (UNAM Station)

19° 29.3′ N · 104° 59.7′ W

Inland and south of Bahía Chamela, UNAM's Chamela biological station (1971) and the 131 sq km Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve protect one of Mexico's best stands of tropical dry forest, home to jaguars, ocelots, crocodiles, macaws and huge winter flocks of migratory birds.

Practical

Position from Wikipedia (reserve coordinate). This is a research reserve, not a park with public trailheads: visits are by arrangement. Contact the UNAM station (Apartado postal 21, San Patricio, Jalisco 48980; +52 315 35 10 200 or 35 10 202, ext. 26511/26512) before going; its website publishes a regulations page and directions. From the Pérula anchorage it is a taxi ride south by road; bring water and sun protection.
