Bahía Careyes Anchorage

19° 26.5′ N · 105° 2.1′ W · approximate

A tiny, theatrical bay of islets and pink-sand coves framed by the bright red, blue and orange villas of Costa Careyes — one of the most photogenic stops on the coast, and one of the most difficult places to anchor.

Practical

Position approximate: placed between Playa Rosa and the offshore islets from the OpenStreetMap coastline; no published waypoint was found. Small: room for only a few boats. Contrary wind, swell and tide make it 'a very difficult place to anchor': a stern anchor is effectively required to hold the bow into the swell, and crews have had to adjust the stern line once or twice a day as afternoon wind waves and night swell came from different directions. In big swell the bay becomes a 'washing machine'. Dinghy landing at Playa Rosa (small beach restaurant) or at Playa Careyes to the east; Playa Blanca is to the west. Much of the shore is private and a 2013 report says guards turned away the public from some beaches — be discreet. Red tide can end snorkeling plans. No fuel or provisions; an ATM is in Careyes village.
