Bahía Chipehua Anchorage

16° 1.9′ N · 95° 22.7′ W · approximate

A small bay by the fishing village of Playa Chipehua on the west side of the Gulf of Tehuantepec: the favorite overnight stop on the 'beach route' for boats hugging the shore between Huatulco and Chiapas.

Practical

Approximate: placed just offshore of the OSM village node for Playa Chipehua (16.0364, -95.3774); no published anchor waypoint was found, so approach in daylight on radar and sounder. Practical Sailor's author (2025) prefers the beach route, anchoring each night with anchorages about 90 miles apart, and names Chipehua as the favorite on the west side. An 1879 US Navy (USS Tuscarora) survey charted anchorage at 'Chipequa'. A 2004 cruiser photographed Punta Chipehua while motoring into heavy wind and seas: if a Tehuano fills in, the shore gives flat water but no shelter from the wind. Village pangas often come alongside; the Practical Sailor author hands out granola bars and treats.
