Animas Slot (Bahía de las Ánimas)
28° 50.3′ N · 113° 14.9′ W
A steep-walled slot at the north end of Bahía de las Ánimas: it can howl a near gale outside while a couple of hundred yards in it is calm, with a sweet beach and some of the best snorkeling in the northern Sea.
Practical
Totally open to the north — summer (SE/W wind) anchorage. A reef that usually shows breakers guards the east entrance (extension of the point separating the slot from Enmedio) — give it room. The slot is deep and narrow: anchor shallower for a smaller swing, between the prominent rocky reef on the SE side and the south end of the big rock islet forming the west wall, in 20-25 ft good sand. Circle-snorkel the rock islet at high slack — current must allow it, and the gap to shore may be too shallow at low tide. Unfinished eco-resort palapas on the northern beach. Bugs (gnats, moths) at night. The Log: the slot gives better south-wind shelter than the larger Bahía de las Ánimas 5 miles SW, which has about 11 south-wind anchorages of its own. Divers: the SE reef off the point (waypoint 28°50.41'N, 113°14.72'W, 40-90+ ft, strong currents possible) is on S/V Ceilidh's dive list — see Animas Slot Southeast Reef Dive.
