Sargassum Season (Antigua)
17° 2.3′ N · 61° 41.3′ W · approximate
Since 2011 huge mats of floating sargassum weed have drifted into the Caribbean most springs and summers, piling up on windward beaches. On Antigua the Atlantic-facing east coast (Half Moon Bay, Long Bay, Nonsuch Bay's outer reef) takes the brunt.
Practical
Pin is Half Moon Bay on the windward coast, as an example of an exposed beach. USF's Sargassum Watch reports beaching events on Caribbean shores in nearly every spring and summer since 2011; rotting weed releases hydrogen sulphide, fouls propellers and water intakes, and smothers turtle nesting beaches (USF, Wikipedia). For sailors: check the USF monthly outlook before planning east-coast stays, keep raw-water strainers clean, avoid motoring through thick mats, and expect the leeward (west and south) anchorages to stay cleaner.
