Green Island West Beach Anchorage
17° 4.3′ N · 61° 40.9′ W · approximate
Anchor off the west beach of Green Island at the mouth of Nonsuch Bay, behind the barrier reef: brilliant turquoise water, constant cooling trade wind, kitesurfers and a palm-fringed beach with no swell.
Practical
Pin is placed off the island's west end and checked to be in water against OSM coastline. Green Island is owned by the Mill Reef Club (since 1947); members allow yachtsmen to use the north and north-west side of the island only, and the interior is off limits (AMG, ABYMA). Approach from the south past York Island and Submarine Rock (see passages); the safest exit is the same way. Excellent reef snorkelling nearby; a kitesurf school uses a shelter on the island. Moorings laid by Fisheries were reported corroded and unsafe in 2021: inspect before use. Busy with day-charter cats by day, quiet at night. NEMMA marine reserve rules apply.
Best for
The classic east-coast anchorage: flat water, big breeze, reef snorkelling
Season
Best in normal ENE trades; open to the wind, not the sea
