Humpback Whale Season (St Kitts & Nevis)
17° 13.2′ N · 62° 37.2′ W · approximate
North Atlantic humpbacks winter in the West Indies to mate and calve, and they pass through the northern Leewards from about December to April - keep watch on passages to and from Statia, Saba and Montserrat.
Practical
Position is a representative point in The Narrows. No St Kitts-specific whale-watching operator or sighting record was found; this entry draws on NOAA (North Atlantic humpbacks migrate south in late fall to calve and mate in the West Indies) and St Barth, about 40 nm north, where humpbacks are present December to April (Gustavia Harbour). Saba Bank to the northwest is a recognised whale area (see the Saba entry). Keep at least 100 yards away (NOAA guideline), slow down and keep a lookout on night passages - mothers and calves rest at the surface.
Best for
Planning winter passages and a lookout for whales
