Humpback Whale Season (Saba Bank)
17° 25.0′ N · 63° 30.0′ W
In winter humpback whales migrate through the waters around Saba and Statia - the Saba Bank is an important breeding and calving area, and divers on Saba sometimes hear whales singing.
Practical
Coordinates are the Saba Bank centre, 17°25'N 63°30'W (Netherlands CBD EBSA submission). Saba Tourism says whales are heard or seen breaching during the winter months; STENAPA describes January to March as the migration window seen from Statia's Botanical Garden lookout. The bank is part of the Yarari Marine Mammal and Shark Sanctuary - keep a respectful distance and slow down. Keep watch on passages from SXM, Saba and Statia.
