Hawksbill Turtle Nesting (Antigua)

17° 9.3′ N · 61° 45.2′ W · approximate

Critically endangered hawksbill turtles nest on Antigua's beaches, above all at Pasture Bay on Long Island, home since 1987 of the Jumby Bay Hawksbill Project, the longest continuously running hawksbill research programme in the world.

Practical

Pin is the centre of Long Island (OSM); Pasture Bay's exact position is not published in the sources used. Nesting runs mainly June to November (NEMMA plan). Darkwood Beach on the west coast becomes a turtle-watching spot July to September, with beach bars welcoming visitors to look for nesting turtles or moonlit hatchings (tourism board). Galleon Beach and Turtle Bay in Falmouth Harbour are also nesting sites. Keep lights off and stay well back from nesting turtles; do not anchor or drag in Turtle Bay (ABYMA).
