Codrington Lagoon National Park
17° 39.0′ N · 61° 50.0′ W
The Eastern Caribbean's largest saltwater lagoon is a Ramsar wetland and national park. It is 9 km long, mostly 1-4.5 m deep, and fringed with mangroves that serve as the nursery for Barbuda's lobster, bonefish and reef fish.
Practical
Coordinate verified from Wikipedia (lagoon centroid). Rules for visiting yachts: anchoring inside the lagoon is not recommended (Noonsite). Only Barbudan boats may enter the frigatebird sanctuary. Fishing in the lagoon is prohibited except line fishing from shore. Permits are required before any damage to mangrove or seagrass. Dragging any vessel across the sandbar between the lagoon and Low Bay is specifically prohibited. A 2017 report lists fines of US$250 for a first offence and US$500 for a second. Jet skis, spear guns and anchoring on reefs are banned throughout Barbuda's protected waters. The lagoon connects to the sea by Cuffy Creek at its north tip and by the inlets Hurricane Irma cut through the western barrier in 2017. Codrington village is on the east shore.
