Barbuda Fishing & Lobster

17° 38.5′ N · 61° 49.7′ W · approximate

Barbuda is famous for spiny lobster and conch, landed by small boats using traditional pots and wire lassos. Bonefishing in the lagoon flats and trolling for kingfish, mahi and tuna are done with local skippers.

Practical

Coordinate approx: set at the Codrington Fishery Complex (OpenStreetMap way 347929322), where boats land and you can buy straight from fishermen, often around 2-4pm in good weather. Rules: all fishing in Barbuda waters must be done on a licensed Barbudan boat. Visitors need a permit to fish within 5.55 km of shore. No spearfishing. Parrotfish (chub) and sea urchins are banned at all times. Lagoon fishing is limited to line fishing from shore. There are size limits on lobster and conch, and lobster with eggs, tar spots or soft shells is always illegal. Closed seasons (Fisheries Division, 2026): spiny lobster 1 May-30 June and parrotfish 1 May-31 July, with fines up to EC$50,000. Refuse undersized or out-of-season seafood. Arrange a fishing trip through your taxi driver, Barbuda Cottages or the Pink Sand Water Taxi. Barracuda is widely eaten locally; Barbudaful says ciguatera is not generally a problem in larger fish here, but ask locally.
