Saronic Gulf Common Dolphins

37° 34.2′ N · 23° 27.0′ E · approximate

The Saronic Gulf is one of the Aegean's gathering areas for short-beaked common dolphins, and pods often find yachts on the open water between Poros, Methana and Aegina; fin whales have been seen in the gulf too.

Practical

Coordinate is approx: an open-water point between Poros, Methana and Aegina chosen as a typical passage area, not a fixed sighting site. Wikipedia (Saronic Gulf): 'one of congregating areas for short-beaked common dolphins in Aegean Sea', and fin whales have been sighted more often in recent years. The Mediterranean population of short-beaked common dolphin is listed on CMS Appendix I (Wikipedia, Common dolphin). Etiquette: slow down and hold a steady course, let dolphins choose to bow-ride, never chase or cut through a pod, and keep swimmers out of the water near them. Report fin whale sightings to Greek cetacean researchers.
