Methana Town Harbour

37° 34.8′ N · 23° 23.6′ E

The L-shaped ferry harbour of the old spa town of Methana on the east side of the volcanic peninsula, where the smell of sulphur greets you before the quay does. Quiet, cheap and rarely full, it is a calm alternative to Poros and Aegina.

Practical

Navily (via 12knots) places the Methana ferry quay at 37.58044N 23.39261E; reviewers value the free berths outside high season and the water and electricity paid by card, but note a somewhat run-down town. SailingIssues: the ferry dock is now extended into an L; go stern-to on the inside where indicated; ferries use mainly the NE and SE sides, and you may be told to leave if a ferry needs the inside berth; open to southerlies. A 2010 cruising blog describes a ferry that spins and lies stern-to on its anchor here, so watch its manoeuvres. Water is cloudy with sulphur, which reportedly keeps hull fouling down. Fuel station (AEGEAN) mapped next to the harbour (OpenStreetMap 37.58244N 23.39256E). Town shops: supermarket, bakery and pharmacies a block or two inland (OpenStreetMap). Restaurant recommended by SailingIssues: To Steki, a few blocks from the dock.
