Vagionia Sunken Settlement Snorkel (Poros)

37° 31.9′ N · 23° 29.0′ E

Poros's best snorkel: in the pine-ringed northern bay of Vagionia the water is clear enough to make out the foundations and cobbled streets of an ancient settlement on the seabed.

Practical

Coordinate is the Vagionia beach (OpenStreetMap way 403503792, 'Vagionia Beach'); the remains lie off the beach. Visit Greece: 'Beneath the surface lie the remains of an ancient settlement.' The Crazy Tourist: with snorkelling gear 'you can make out the foundations and cobblestone streets of an ancient town on the seabed'; one taverna rents sun loungers. Anchor off in the bay (see the Barbaria Bay & Vagionia Beach anchorage entry) and swim or dinghy in. The bay faces north toward Attica, so it is a calm-weather stop and uncomfortable in the summer northerlies (meltemi). Look, don't touch: removing antiquities from Greek waters is illegal.

Best for

Snorkelling over ancient ruins

Season

Jun–Sep in settled weather; avoid in northerlies
