Makris Gialos Anchorage

37° 52.7′ N · 20° 43.6′ E

An under-rated bay of turquoise water off a long pebble beach on the north-east coast, with perfect holding on sand close in and space to take a line ashore. In summer dozens of catamarans and monohulls swing here.

Practical

SailingIssues: open to northerlies and easterlies, otherwise a delightful anchorage; can be rolly at times. Closest to the beach the holding is perfect on sand and you can take a line ashore; further out, in 6–8 m, the seabed is sand, stones and rock. Approach ideally from the north-east: reefs run east from the headlands. The passage between the shore and Mikro (Kapari) islet is safe. Ashore: To Petrino taverna and the Marakis supermarket to the north (SailingIssues); a supermarket and restaurants at Mikro Nisi hamlet (OpenStreetMap). Blue Cave boat trips leave from the beach.

Best for

Day or night anchorage in clear water within reach of the Blue Caves

Season

May–Oct in W–S or light winds; open to N–E
